Product Description

A fuller introduction to the route, pace, terrain, and overall trip style.

Nar and Phu Valley were closed to tourists until 2002, and are far removed in both the time and space from the neighboring Annapurna Circuit. As you branch north up the Nar Valley, the flood of trekkers passing through Manang turns to a tiny trickle. Yak herding and agriculture remain the mainstays of the economy rather than tourism, and the traditional stone-walled villages seem to have maintained a lifestyle untouched for centuries.

The trek takes you up narrow gorges to medieval villages, past impressive chortens, herds of blue sheep and spectacular Cliffside trails, and finally over one of the region’s highest trekking passes. You will pass abandoned settlements once used by Khampa rebels and teams of mountaineers headed to the popular peaks of Himling, Kang Garu and Ratna Chuli.

The trek to Nar Phu Valley is an excellent, adventurous add-on while visiting the Manang region or partaking in the the Manaslu trek. After NarPhu, you could even continue to Jomsom, either over  the Thorung La or, if you are properly equipped, via Tilicho lake and Meso Kanto La, making full use of time.

Trekking to Nar Phu Valley begins from Besisahar, which is a 6-hour ride from Kathmandu. The Annapurna Circuit trek also begins from Besisahar, where you can meet other trekkers who will mostly be doing the Annapurna Circuit. The Nar Phu trek leads up through the valley of Marshyangdi until Koto, and leads towards a northern valley to Dharmasala and Khyang. This route ends up in Nawal, which turns into a higher route to Manang from Pissang (part of the Annapurna Circuit trail), then you could join in on the Annapurna Circuit trek, or head down to Pissang for a shortcut route back to Kathmandu. You will end up again at Besisahar and take a bus ride back to Kathmandu.

However, we will try our best to ensure that the trip runs as according to the stated plan but be prepared for flexibility if necessary.

Our Guides, trip and safety
This trip takes you to the remote Himalayan region, it is very essential that you are accompanied with the very experienced and qualified leader for the safe and successful trip. We have local trek guide working with us who is trained and qualified on the trip. At this trip, there would be our one Trek leader and one assistance leader on each additional 2 peoples on the trek- this arrangement would ensure that even if any of our guide/ assistance guides get sick or if any travelers gets sick and need to be back or delay the days of walking, it would still works smoothly and there would not be any impact on our original trek plan. Also each two trekker would have one Sherpa helper for carrying your trekking bags.

Our entire accommodation is at twin share unless stated but single supplement accommodation is also available on personal request (Which cost more).  In city, only breakfast is included on the offered trip itinerary but while in trek full board of meals is included (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner). We provide you lunch from the local tea- house/ Mt. Lodge from en route. Breakfast and dinner is to be provided from the same tea- house/ guest house we would stop for overnight. Basically foods provided are depends on the availability of the Mt. lodges we would be staying but in general, you can have Nepalese foods (Dal Bhat), Tibetan fried bread, various soups, Momo’s (steamed dumplings), potatoes, pastas and even a version of pizza! So, over all you have a different choice of food on trek.

Trekking Seasons
We do have two best seasons to attempt this trek to Nar Phu valley. As this trip is a big trip to you, we always suggest you to come at the right time of the year as far as possible.

Spring: - (March, April, May) - Best warmest time to trek. Rhododendron flowers in bloom- excellent trails and clear skies, best visibility. Good Temperature, warmest weather of the year.

Autumn: - (Mid September, October and November) - excellent trails, clear blue skies, best visibility.

Winter months: - (December, January and February) are also good, but it’s obviously colder. You have to be prepared for this. It is up to you to plan this trek at this cold time or not.

Summer: - Monsoon, so rain and visibility can be a big issue (from Mid June, July and August). We do not suggest you this time for the trek.

Mountain Weather
The weather conditions in the mountains are notoriously difficult to predict. During the day it can be nice and warm and the nights are generally always cooler.

The weather you will experience on this Trek is extreme and rather unpredictable so it is best to be prepared for all eventualities. Temperature during the trek to Nar-Phu Valley is very normal and even hot below 2500m; the expected temperature during a day is from 20 to 25 degree Celsius during spring months and 10 to 20 degree Celsius during the autumn months. The night time can drop to 5 to 0 degree Celsius. Temperature above Koto (2600m), the expected temperature during the day is from 5 to 10 Degree Celsius at spring months and 6 to 15 degree Celsius at autumn months. The However, above mentioned chats of temperature are the expected but temperature can be different as per the everyday weather conditions of the mountain so it is unpredictable. Expect the unexpected!

Acclimatization
There is no way to prepare for altitude other than to spend time at the mountain. Being in very good physical condition will help ameliorate some of the exhaustion that people often feel, but it will not prevent altitude caused medical problems such as Acute Mountain Sickness. This itinerary is designed with a high degree of awareness of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) in mind and to ensure a comfortable and safe adventure trek in the Himalayas. Staying well hydrated and getting plenty of rest may help. The maximum elevation of this trek will be reached at Nagthali Danda 3300 meter above sea level. This is not serious altitude line but it may happen if you do not care about it. We have specially designed our trek itinerary with keeping maximum acclimatization days into the itinerary to make you acclimatize but ultimately your response at altitude is due to genetic factors. Trekking above from 3000m, walking will be more difficult because of the drop in oxygen levels and the humidity. At these heights there is around 20%- 30% less oxygen than at sea level, so your body needs time to adapt these conditions and it is absolutely essential to have sufficient time for acclimatization. That’s why; in this given itinerary all of these factors have been taken into consideration while design this itinerary to minimize the risk of AMS.

Communication facilities on this trek
These days, there are enough communication facilities on this trek, most of the local villages has local telephone booth  thus if required, you can easily communicate with your friends and family however the cost is slightly expensive, 2 to 3 US dolor per minute. Nowadays, during the clear days, reception of Nepalese cell phones is on throughout the trail, our guide will have Cell phone on the trip so that we can talk to you very often to pass message to your family if required.

Train Yourself
This trip requires walking on altitude above 3000m from sea level for the duration of 4 days. So it is not so important to have walking or previous trekking experience. The best preparation you can do is to hike, even if it is under gym conditions. Running will help your stamina but does not fully prepare your muscles for a strenuous hike.

Go for walks. It is advisable to go for frequent walks which should include some uphill and downhill sections if possible in your surrounding area. Take your daypack with you with at least a weight of three kilograms or more. This will simulate the conditions you will encounter while on your trekking with us. Join a gymnasium. Ask your gym instructor to work out a fitness program that consists of progressive resistance exercises. An experienced instructor will be able to tailor a safe exercise regime based on your age, condition and strength. Work with a schedule that progresses to higher resistance or weights as you develop your fitness.

Visit Your Medical Doctor
Please do visit your medical doctor, consult him before heading to such an altitude trekking destination. Those who have a problem of heart, lung, respiratory or blood should talk with their medical doctor and take his reference and report us before planning this trip with us.

We deserve not to take those on our trip who are having such medical conditions which may cause incomplete trip with us.

  1. Upon arrival at Tribhuwan International Airport in Kathmandu, we will welcome you and assist you to the Hotel.  We can meet later on that day or the next day to take you to our head office to brief you on your upcoming Trek with us. At that time we will introduce you to your trekking guide and Sherpa. If your flight arrives on time, we will take you to one of the most popular local restaurants with delicious Nepalese food, cultural music and ethnic dance. This will give you a glimpse into the different ethnic groups of the country. If you arrive late in the evening we can do this the next day. Overnight stay at the hotel.

  2. After breakfast, you will begin a city tour of Kathmandu where you will see the main attractions of the valley. On this tour you will visit the Boudhnath Stupa, Pashupatinath temple, Swyambhunath Stupa (Monkey Temple), and Kathmandu Durbar Square (the old palace). After finishing the city tour, we will meet again to check your clothing and trekking equipment (sleeping bag, down jacket and trekking boots). This evening will be spent in Kathmandu.

  3. Our guide will meet you at the hotel as per departure time and takes you to the bus station where your journey starts towards west of Kathmandu through Prithivi highway till Dumre. After that the road turns towards north to Besisahar. This is an excellent drive which has interesting scenery of the Mountains, Rivers, waterfalls and Jungle as well as farm terraces and village on the mountains.  Stay overnight at the lodge.

  4. Your first day of the trek begins after breakfast at the lodge which is an easy walk at the beginning through the dusty road towards north of the valley and ends at Bhulbhule before crossing the suspension bridge over Marsyangdi River. One the way you will enjoy the view of Mt. Manaslu and Nagdi Chuli including many waterfalls and Gurung village. After that the trail leads uphill to Bahundanda for overnight stay.

  5. After breakfast at the lodge, the trail drops steep down to the bottom of the hill and few up downs to Syange to cross suspension bridge. There is mind-blowing view of waterfall at Syange. Then the trail continue leads few uphill and few down hills to Chamje. Stay overnight at the lodge.

  6. At the beginning of the day the trail drops down to the river to cross the bridge and continue climbs along the river bank to Tal Phedi. There is a short steep climb to get to the Tal and an easy walk through the valley. Tal is a first village of Manang District which is located on the bank of the Marsyangdi River has typical entrance gate which is influences by Tibetan culture. Then the trail continues up and down to Dharapani village and continues up to Bagarchhap for overnight.

  7. After hot breakfast at the lodge the trail slightly climbs up to Danaque from where you will enjoy the view of Mt.Manaslu. There are two ways to get in to the next village but we will take you through the higher route which has an excellent view of mountains and passing through the old village of Tyanja. Then easy walk through the pine forest to Koto for Overnight.

  8. Nar-Phu has long been considered a baeyul, or ‘hidden land’, and even these days most Annapurna trekkers stride straight past the entrance to the valley without even realizing it. The branches off the Annapurna Circuit at Koto (Qupar). The trail climbs steeply above the river through silent forest into a vertical world of cliffs, pine and bamboo and through an open patch of ferns, passing several small-scale hand-sawn timber camps. So overnight in Dharamsala.

  9. From the Dharamsala climb past a landslip and a shepherds’ herd to cross side stream. The trail then veers right, up a side valley, and climbs steeply on switchbacks.

  10. From Khyang quickly swing into the dry, desert gorge of the Phu river, inching along on a hair-raising section of trail carved out of the cliff face. You can follow the yak trail onto the moraine but for base camp itself (three hours) follow the stream side trail that squeezes between the hillside and the moraine.

  11. The trail drop past fantastically eroded hoodoos, over sandy gullies connected by bridge-like platforms. The entire mountainside feels like it’s about to collapse at any moment.

  12. Today’s climb starts immediately with a steep burst up to the main trail and it doesn’t ease up for an hour or more.

  13. Today’s stage is less than two hours so you can either spend most of the day exploring Nar before departing for Kang La Phedi. Leave Nar through the village kani and take the gradual path up through the valley, with Pisang Peak.

  14. The ascent of the kang La isn’t all that difficult in good conditions, through it can be treacherous in bed weather or if there’s lot of snow. You can expect snow and ice as late as September, but the trail is generally kept clear by convoys of yaks and trekking groups.

  15. After breakfast the trail descent to Pissang via Gharu which is old village and continue downhill to Chame which is district head quarter of Manang. There are

  16. At the beginning the easy trail leads to Koto and continue down to Danaque which offers spectacular view of Mt. Manaslu. 17. The trail descends to Chanje and continues to Ghermu phant then gently up to Bahundanda. After that the trail drops down to Khudi and continues to Besisahar along the bank of Marsyangdi River. Overnight stay at the lodge.

  18. It is a same highway you are driving to Kathmandu. Evening you would have short time to do some shop around Thamel. We would official meet this late evening and go for dinner together to share your entire experience of the trek. Overnight stay at Hotel.

  19. Today is the last day of the trip with us. If you would like to extend your holiday with us, we will help you if you require otherwise we will assist you to the airport as per your flight departure time. "Several months ago, a friend of mine came back from world-round-trip and said, “A.B.C trekking is what you cannot see in any other places but Nepal”, and excitingly showed me a lot of incredibly beautiful pictures from the mountain and the country, Nepal. The story he shared caught my heart and strongly made me want to visit this country. And now, I also strongly recommend this adventure into wild nature. This is the reason why I am here, coming back from 10days Annapurna base camp(A.B.C) to write a review for one of the best agency (Adventure Mountain Explore Treks & Expedition P. Ltd) in Kathmandu and for you. What I have found during this trip is that this trip is therapeutic, educational, and exciting. First of all, in the mountain area, there are no such things as mobile, familiar TV show, disturbing noise, and annoying friends. You are literally surrounded by nature and all you can trust is your guide and your heart. You also have much free time in the mountain, which makes you think a lot about your future. Second, trekking is educational. You may see a various people from around the world as well as local people. This, I believe, is the best way of getting to know each other, as you will see them again and again during the trail. Exchanging their personal story and back ground helps you grow your personality as well. Third, it is exciting. There is no question about it. When I saw the panorama view from A.B.C, I got so excited that I could not take my camera away (I am sure I took more than 100 pictures and video there). That was defiantly worth it. Now, I am going to share a bit about my trekking partner, my guide, Lok Bhatta. He is friendly guy. He is not only experienced guide, but he knows how he can entertain us during the whole trip. His caring and his humor take up my good memory of trip. Since Lok and I spent 11days together, it is no wonder we became a best friends. Also he persistently looks after me. When I wanted him to take pictures, he always s..."

"My mother and I arrived in Kathmandu with just 2 days to prepare for a trek around Annapurna Circuit. We feel very lucky to have met Mr. Tika Regmi and through Adventure Mountain Explore treks we were able to hire a porter-guide to facilitate exactly the kind of trek we wanted, a self-directed trek with Nepali assistance. Our porter-guide Sujan was a trusted and integral part of our little trekking party. He was very knowledgeable about the route, its hotels and side trips, and he even introduced us to local people and gave us interactions with local Nepalese that we could not have experienced on our own, like a tea in the home of a local family! We couldn’t be any more pleased with our trek. Shanna Simmons 1152 Crescent Avenue Klamath Falls, OR 97601 USA shannasimmons@hotmail.com"

"Thanks Tika We arrived in Kathmandu on November 4, 2011 with hopes to do the Annapurna Circuit Trek to Muktinah. We had no firm guide or porters arranged as yet but were lucky to stay at the Blue Horizon Hotel in Thamel where we met Tika Regmi at the Hotel Blue Horizon. Tika is the director of Adventure Mountain Explore which wa located across the street. With Tika's expert help, our trek was arranged with an extraordinary guide, Sittal "Hom" Simkhada and two equally adept porters, Santosh Uperkoti and Sanjeep. Sittal knew the trail very well having done it more than 25 times. He provided information and insights about each peak and landmark along the way. He guided us up and down with care and confidence, setting a good pace that worked for each of us, our ages being 69, 67, and 30 years old. Sittal also got us to our teahouse rooms promptly and made sure we got our meals on time. We never had to ask for service; it was always provided with a smile. We enjoyed the camaraderie or our guide and porters and spent time playing cards together and exchanging stories. Clearly Sittal loved what he was doing and was experienced with every aspect of being a guide. When our daughter became ill along the way in Manang, Sittal conferred with Tika and we took an extra day to make sure all was well before continuing. There was no pressure to move on before we felt ready. When we reached the summit at Thorang la Pass we all celebrated together. It was a group achievement as well as a personal one for each of us. We are pleased to recommend Tika Regni as trek organizer and Sittal Simkhada as guide with our highest esteem and respect.
