A fuller introduction to the route, pace, terrain, and overall trip style.

Bhutan Tricity Tour is the tour of the three most iconic cities in Bhutan that allows visitors to discover the soul of Bhutan. The cities include Paro, Thimphu (the capital) and Punakha. It’s a thoughtfully crafted 5-day Bhutan tour package that offers a perfect blend of cultural immersion, architectural splendor and Himalayan serenity.

Begin this 4 nights, 5 days Bhutan tour with your arrival in Paro. A scenic drive, introducing the immensely beautiful landscape, will then take you to the country’s capital that greets you with its immense natural and cultural highlights such as the Great Buddha Dordenma (one of the largest statues of Buddha in the world), the Royal Takin Preserve (a home to Bhutan’s national animal), Simply Bhutan (a living museum to experience Bhutanese culture), craft bazaar (an exhibition of Bhutanese arts and crafts), and Tashicho Dzong (an ancient fortress exhibiting timeless architecture). There’s more to explore in Thimpu, however, this tour first winds to Punakha, before introducing the capital’s other attractions.

In Punakha, visit Chimi Lhakhang (the Fertility Temple), Punakha Dzong (the second oldest and the second largest dzong in Bhutan) and villages like Rinchengang Village (a village dedicated to preserving the timeless craft of traditional Bhutanese stone masonry) and Lungkha Village (an ideal spot to admire the lush paddy fields and understand why Punakha is celebrated as Bhutan’s rice bowl).

After visiting Punakha, get back to Thimpu to explore its additional highlights such as Simtokha Dzong (the oldest dzong in Bhutan),Centenary Farmer’s Market (the largest fresh produce market in Bhutan, offering a vibrant glimpse into the country’s rich agrarian tradition), Changlimithang National Stadium ( an excellent place to experience and appreciate Bhutan’s vibrant sports culture) and Memorial Chorten (a unique blend of stupa and memorial that reflects the deep spiritual devotion of the Bhutanese people).

Drive back to Paro to explore its attractions, such as the iconic Taktsang Monastery (a Buddhist monastery located on a cliff 3,120 meter above sea level that symbolizes the country’s deep-rooted Buddhist faith and mystique), Kyichu Lhakhang (one of the oldest and sacred temples built by a Tibetan emperor that radiates spirituality and serenity and marks the ancient roots of Buddhism in the kingdom), Paro Rinpung Dzong (a 15th-century fortress that offers a profound glimpse into Bhutan’s historical legacy, spiritual depth and architectural brilliance) and traditional farmhouse (locally run farmhouses that offers the experience of traditional Bhutanese architecture and rural lifestyle). This itinerary also includes the visit of Dochula Pass (a mountain pass adorned with 108 serene memorial chortens, offering panoramic views of the Himalayas and spiritual gateway between Bhutan’s valleys) and Tamchog Lhakhang (a revered 15th century temple that stands as a testament to the country’s enduring Buddhist traditions and artistic heritage) to highlight Bhutan’s natural beauty and spiritual heritage. For more details, please refer to the detailed itinerary.

Thus, combining the country's spiritual heart, royal history and natural grandeur into one unforgettable experience, this 5-day Bhutan tour itinerary offers a well-balanced itinerary suited for travelers with a wide range of interests, such as culture, traditions, spirituality, photography, architecture, food, history etc.

However, should you wish to customize the itinerary or package to suit your specific preferences, we are happy to assist.

If you prefer to travel during the best season, plan your visit between March and May and September and December; otherwise, this tour is available year-round.

For those interested in attending one of Bhutan’s traditional and vibrant festivals, the three cities included in this itinerary also host celebrations such as Paro Tshechu in Paro; Rhododendron Festival, Thimphu Drubchen, Thimpu Tshechu, Jhomolhari Mountain Festival, Dechenphu Tshechu and Druk Wangyel Tshechu in Thimpu and Punakha Dromchoe, Punakha Tshechu and Talo Tshechu in Punakha.

  1. Altitude Paro: 2,200m

    Altitude Thimpu: 2,300m

    Distance Paro to Thimpu: 54km

    Driving time: 1hr +

Begin your 5 days Bhutan Tricity Tour by flying into the Paro International Airport in Paro, the country’s only international airport. Proceed with the immigration and customs formalities, meet your Bhutanese guide, awaiting your arrival outside the arrival area, and receive traditional welcome to the country.

Now enjoy a scenic 1+ hour drive to the capital, Thimpu. This drive along the Paro and Thimpu River introduces you to the enchanting landscape and pristine little villages in Bhutan. On the way visit Tachog/Tamchog Lhakhang - a 15th century temple built by the legendary “Iron Bridge Builder”, Thangton Gyalpo that houses the relics, such as a statue of Lord Buddha, Zhabdrung, Guru Padmasambhava and Chenrezig Avalokiteshvara and the books (Kanjur and Tanjur) and the walking stick of Thangton Gyalpo. The temple is located along the Paro-Thimpu Highway, on the base of the mountain, roughly five kilometers before the confluence of Paro and Thimpu River. About a 10-minute walk from the highway, across the bridge built in the 15th century, will take you to the temple complex. Explore the temple and get back to the highway to continue the journey to Thimpu.

In Thimpu, check into the hotel, have lunch and set out to explore the attractions such as:

The Great Buddha Dordenma: It’s a 51.5 meter tall, bronze and gold statue of Lord Buddha, believed to be one of the largest statues of Buddha in the world. Located on the top of the hill in Kuenselphodrang Nature Park, the statue fulfills a prophecy dating to the 8th century and is said to emanate an aura of peace and happiness into the world.

The Royal Takin Preserve: It’s a unique wildlife sanctuary dedicated to protecting the country’s wildlife, especially the Takin (National animal of Bhutan)- a rare and fascinating animal deeply rooted in local legend and culture.

Simply Bhutan: It’s a unique interactive living museum that offers a number of participatory activities, such as dressing in traditional gho and kira, sipping local butter tea and rice spirit (ara), participating in archery and dart (khuru), watching artisans and folk singers at work to truly experience and feel Bhutanese life firsthand rather than just observing it.

Authentic Bhutanese Craft Bazaar: It’s a handicraft market, consisting of about 80 stalls that showcase and sell traditional arts and crafts made by local artisans. The assortment includes textiles, paintings, wood slate and stone carvings, bronze and brass statues, silver and gold ornaments, paper crafts and bamboo and cane products.

Tashicho Dzong: Open to public only after the office hours in Bhutan, this dzong is a 13th century grand fortress-monastery that now houses the Throne Room of the King, the Cabinet Secretariat and the Central Monastic body. It’s a perfect place to understand Bhutan’s administrative and spiritual life and traditional Bhutanese architecture. The flag lowering ceremony is one of the key highlights of this attraction in Bhutan that takes place around sunset every weekday. In the evening, the dzong is illuminated enhancing the architecture, providing perfect photography opportunities to the visitors.

After visiting the dzong, you will get back to the hotel in Thimpu for dinner and overnight stay.

    Meals: Lunch and Dinner

  2. Altitude Thimpu: 2,300m

    Altitude Punakha: 1,350m

    Altitude Dochula Pass: 3,050m

    Distance Thimpu to Punakha: 71km

    Driving time: 3hr

Start your journey to Punakha, after breakfast in Thimpu. On the way, stop at Dochula Pass (3,050m), located roughly 30 kilometers from Thimpu, on the Thimpu-Punakha road. The pass features Druk Wangyal Chortens, which is a cluster of 108 chortens (white stupas), built to honor Bhutanese soldiers who lost their lives during the 2003 military operation and a beautiful mountain panorama of the Eastern Himalayas including Gangkar Puensum (the highest unclimbed peak in the world). Here, spend some time exploring the chortens, take in the view of the distant peaks and  also visit the nearby Druk Wangyal Lhakhang (temple).

Now continue the drive to Punakha. In Punakha, check into the hotel and set out to explore its attractions. First you will visit a traditional Bhutanese farmhouse to enjoy traditional Bhutanese lunch and experience rural hospitality. After lunch, take a 20-minute walk through Sopsokha Village to visit Chimi Lhakhang “the Fertility Temple”. This 15th century temple built by Ngawang Chogyal, is closely associated with Lama Drukpa Kunley (a Tibetan Buddhist saint), who is popularly known as the Diving Madman for his unorthodox methods of imparting spiritual wisdom. This temple is believed to have the power to bless childless couples with fertility.

Later, go for a short hike to historic Rinchengang Village, famous for its master stone craftsmen. Over the years, these craftsmen have not just preserved the art of traditional Bhutanese stonework, but have also passed on the skill to the following generations. Enjoy breathtaking views of Wangduephodrang Dzong as well as the serene Wangdue Valley. Engage in little conversation with the villagers and gain insight into their lifestyle, culture, traditions as well as the craftsmanship. Then get back to the hotel in Punakha for dinner and overnight stay.

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

  3. Altitude Punakha:1,350m

    Altitude Thimpu: 2,300m

    Distance Punakha to Thimpu: 71km

    Driving time: 3hr

After breakfast at the hotel, visit Punakha Dzong. It's a 17th-century fortress located at the confluence of Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu. It is the second oldest and the second largest dzong in Bhutan, which once also served as the capital and parliamentary seat. It also preserves sacred relics that have shaped Bhutan’s history. Thus, this exploration offers architectural beauty and historical depth to its visitors. During spring the blooming jacarandas create a magical ambiance for the visitors. After visiting the dzong, take a 15 minute walk to one of Bhutan's longest (350m) suspension bridges that runs across the Pho Chhu River. Crossing the bridge, walk to Lungkha Village to enjoy its serene and lush paddy field and engage in conversation with amiable farmers going about their day.

After visiting the village, drive back to Thimpu and explore its attractions such as:

Simtokha Dzong: It is the oldest dzong in Bhutan, built in the 17th century by the unifier of Bhutan, Shardrung Ngawang Namgyal.

Centenary Farmer’s Market: The largest and the busiest agricultural market that helps you understand the food culture, agrarian lifestyle and community dynamics.

Changlimithang National Stadium: It's a stadium built on a historical battlefield that now serves as a multipurpose national stadium. A visit to this stadium gives you insight into the sports and national sports culture in Bhutan.

Memorial Chorten: It’s both memorial and stupa, built in the memory of King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck (the Third King), by his mother. It’s a religious and cultural landmark that features elaborate mandalas, prayer wheels, statues and frescoes depicting Buddhist deities and teachings from the Nyingma lineage. This site offers visitors a peaceful and spiritually uplifting experience and the opportunity to witness the deep devotion of local people as they engage in daily rituals.

(Optional): If you are rather interested in the country's art and craft, choose to visit National Institute of Zorig Chusum where students for 4-6 years are taught 13 traditional arts and crafts such as painting, sculpting, crafting, tailoring etc. with the purpose of preserving promoting the tradition arts and crafts.

After visiting the sites, get back to the hotel in Thimpu for overnight stay.

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

  4. Altitude Thimpu: 2,300m

    Altitude Paro: 2,200m

    Altitude Taktsang Monastery: 3,120m

    Distance Thimpu to Paro: 54km

    Driving time: 1hr +

Starting after breakfast in Thimpu, drive back to Paro to hike to Taktsang Monastery (the Tiger’s Nest). It’s a sacred Vajrayana Buddhist temple complex with mystical legend and unusual architecture that lives in a cave in a remote location offering the view of a magnificent mountain range and the paro valley. This monastery, built at the meditation cave of  Guru Padmasambhava is considered one of the most sacred places in the Himalayan Buddhist world.

Depending on the pace, the hike takes 4-5 hours (round trip). From the trailhead around a 1.5 to 2-hour hike will take you to a cafeteria, which is about halfway up. Take a short break to enjoy a cup of tea/coffee and take pictures and videos at the viewing platform. The trail beyond the cafe is a bit difficult as there are some steep and rocky sections. Once at the monastery, you will explore the monastery and hike back down to the cafeteria for lunch, before hiking down to the trailhead to end the hike.

After the hike, drive to Kiychu Lhakhang to explore the 7th century temple built by the Tibetan Emperor Songtsen Gampo. It is believed that the temple was built to subdue the demoness who was obstructing the spread of Buddhism. It’s one of those 108 temples built by this Tibetan Emperor. Out of the 108 temples, 2 are in Bhutan. The temple is still active and central to religious life and visitors can still witness devotional practice, eternal iconography and sacred relics.

If time permits, visit Paro Rinpung Dzong, a 15th century fortress that houses the district monastic body as well as the government administrative offices of Paro. This dzong still retains many shrines and chapels of religious importance to the Bhutanese people and offers visitors insight into its historical, spiritual and architectural heritage.

After spending some time in the dzong, visit one of the traditional farmhouses to experience Bhutanese rural life and hospitality. Eat locally prepared dinner, engage with local people, get insight into the traditional housing and lifestyle and if interested try hot stone bath or even archery to complete the experience.

Get back to the hotel in Paro for overnight stay.

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

  5. If your flight is scheduled in the morning, after breakfast, get transferred to the airport to fly to your onward destination. However, if the flight is scheduled later in the day, spend the morning exploring other attractions, such as the National Museum of Bhutan, Ta Dzong, or even go souvenir shopping at Paro craft and weekend market, before flying out of Bhutan.

    Meals: Breakfast

"Several months ago, a friend of mine came back from world-round-trip and said, “A.B.C trekking is what you cannot see in any other places but Nepal”, and excitingly showed me a lot of incredibly beautiful pictures from the mountain and the country, Nepal. The story he shared caught my heart and strongly made me want to visit this country. And now, I also strongly recommend this adventure into wild nature. This is the reason why I am here, coming back from 10days Annapurna base camp(A.B.C) to write a review for one of the best agency (Adventure Mountain Explore Treks & Expedition P. Ltd) in Kathmandu and for you. What I have found during this trip is that this trip is therapeutic, educational, and exciting. First of all, in the mountain area, there are no such things as mobile, familiar TV show, disturbing noise, and annoying friends. You are literally surrounded by nature and all you can trust is your guide and your heart. You also have much free time in the mountain, which makes you think a lot about your future. Second, trekking is educational. You may see a various people from around the world as well as local people. This, I believe, is the best way of getting to know each other, as you will see them again and again during the trail. Exchanging their personal story and back ground helps you grow your personality as well. Third, it is exciting. There is no question about it. When I saw the panorama view from A.B.C, I got so excited that I could not take my camera away (I am sure I took more than 100 pictures and video there). That was defiantly worth it. Now, I am going to share a bit about my trekking partner, my guide, Lok Bhatta. He is friendly guy. He is not only experienced guide, but he knows how he can entertain us during the whole trip. His caring and his humor take up my good memory of trip. Since Lok and I spent 11days together, it is no wonder we became a best friends. Also he persistently looks after me. When I wanted him to take pictures, he always s..."

"My mother and I arrived in Kathmandu with just 2 days to prepare for a trek around Annapurna Circuit. We feel very lucky to have met Mr. Tika Regmi and through Adventure Mountain Explore treks we were able to hire a porter-guide to facilitate exactly the kind of trek we wanted, a self-directed trek with Nepali assistance. Our porter-guide Sujan was a trusted and integral part of our little trekking party. He was very knowledgeable about the route, its hotels and side trips, and he even introduced us to local people and gave us interactions with local Nepalese that we could not have experienced on our own, like a tea in the home of a local family! We couldn’t be any more pleased with our trek. Shanna Simmons 1152 Crescent Avenue Klamath Falls, OR 97601 USA shannasimmons@hotmail.com"

"Thanks Tika We arrived in Kathmandu on November 4, 2011 with hopes to do the Annapurna Circuit Trek to Muktinah. We had no firm guide or porters arranged as yet but were lucky to stay at the Blue Horizon Hotel in Thamel where we met Tika Regmi at the Hotel Blue Horizon. Tika is the director of Adventure Mountain Explore which wa located across the street. With Tika's expert help, our trek was arranged with an extraordinary guide, Sittal "Hom" Simkhada and two equally adept porters, Santosh Uperkoti and Sanjeep. Sittal knew the trail very well having done it more than 25 times. He provided information and insights about each peak and landmark along the way. He guided us up and down with care and confidence, setting a good pace that worked for each of us, our ages being 69, 67, and 30 years old. Sittal also got us to our teahouse rooms promptly and made sure we got our meals on time. We never had to ask for service; it was always provided with a smile. We enjoyed the camaraderie or our guide and porters and spent time playing cards together and exchanging stories. Clearly Sittal loved what he was doing and was experienced with every aspect of being a guide. When our daughter became ill along the way in Manang, Sittal conferred with Tika and we took an extra day to make sure all was well before continuing. There was no pressure to move on before we felt ready. When we reached the summit at Thorang la Pass we all celebrated together. It was a group achievement as well as a personal one for each of us. We are pleased to recommend Tika Regni as trek organizer and Sittal Simkhada as guide with our highest esteem and respect.
