Product Description

A fuller introduction to the route, pace, terrain, and overall trip style.

For the enthusiasts who are already tired of doing the regular trekking, the Makalu Base Camp Trek will provide you with one of the most exciting trekking facilities in the world that takes you to one of the most isolated area of the Himalayas. Although not as popular as other trekking trails, this little known trail offers unique experience of isolation, varying terrains and vistas of the highest mountain ranges known to man.

These treks offer the best opportunities to explore something entirely different and some of the most pristine areas of the Himalayas and hence Makalu Base Camp Trek is perfectly suitable for such kinds of hikers. As with most treks in Nepal, the route takes you through the Makalu Barun National Park, which is a raw piece of beauty that has consumed forest, rhododendron posy, and high passes.

The trek is particularly interesting due to the four high altitudinal passes which are all above 4, 000 meters. The aesthetics of these passes are presented in such a way that are physically challenging but at the same time fulfilling. This is probably one of the most scenic places from where it is possible to have excellent sightseeing of Mount Everest, Makalu, Lhotse and Kanchenjunga.

It continues in the lower leves of the hills passing through irrigated terraces of paddy fields and rises up through the forests of rhododendron, pine and bamboo trees. The higher you move, the dramatic the changes are– you live among steep valleys, fast flowing rivers, quiet lakes and huge cliffs.
The Makalu Base Camp trek is characterized by the tough terrains, high altitudes, uphill & downhill steep climbs which makes it one of the toughest teahouse trek in Nepal. But the scenic beauty, the stunning mountain peaks and the glacier around is a thing of beauty, every where you look up and you must feel proud to be there when at Makalu Base Camp (4,870m).

It would also be significant to note that one of the prime benefits of this trek is exposure to the cultural endowments. With the help of such a trail, people of Gurung, Rai, and Sherpa are living in remote villages on the trail. They are very friendly people that will be treating you to traditional dishes and giving you a tour of the region and showing you how they live. This cultural interaction makes a wonderful touch to your trekking experience.

The best time to embark on the Makalu Base Camp trek is during the spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) seasons. These months offer clear skies, pleasant temperatures, and the chance to witness the vibrant colors of rhododendron forests in full bloom.

If you're a seasoned trekker in search of a true adventure, the Makalu Base Camp trek offers everything you could want: challenge, solitude, breathtaking landscapes, and rich cultural experiences. This trek is a perfect choice for those looking to step off the popular trekking routes and discover the hidden treasures of the Himalayas.

Useful Information

Travel Insurance:
For everyone planning their next trek in the Himalayas of Nepal, it is highly recommended that you get a travel insurance that covers added expenses that might result due to various health issues, injuries or accidents (together with air ambulance, helicopter rescue and other treatment cost). Your insurance policy should cover up your entire activities that you are planning to accomplish throughout your stay in Nepal. In addition to this, the policyΒ  should also cover death, misplaced luggage, theft and liability, cancellations, medical treatment (counting hospital charges, cost of the medicine, doctor’s fees) as well as repatriation cost. Also, most of the trekking trails in Nepal take you above the altitude of 5000m, therefore, you also need to ensure that your insurance policy covers treks that go over 5000m. In short, its client himself/herself has to take the responsibility regarding unforeseen expenses during the trip.

Health, fitness and experience requirements:
Altitudes in the Himalayas of Nepal definitely demand excellent stamina, tough determination, and the best health condition. Some sections of the trek are quite demanding and some days might even require 8-9 hours of walking.

Though trek to the Makalu Base Camp is considered moderate and easily attainable, it is highly suggested to seek advice, medications and permission from your doctor before scheduling your trek.Β  It is also recommended to take expert guidance from your local General Practitioner regarding necessary guide walks prior to your trek in Nepal. In the absence of GP, seeking advice from travel clinic is also considered as a very good idea.

Moreover, the good news is that, no technical skill is required to plan your trek or any other exploratoryΒ  trips in Nepal. However, your prior hiking or camping experience will definitely be considered as a plus point. Also, a few weeks of regular exercise and jogging is recommended before the trip to build up the required stamina.

Note:Β We kindly request you to inform us regarding your present health condition, medical situation, preceding illnesses and the medications you are taking. We expect you to be honest regarding these issues, so that we can get prepared for emergencies.

Food and Accommodation:
We always make sure that our customers get the right value for their money. Therefore, we always attempt to make some of the best arrangements for our customers. To ensure a comfortable stay, we book tourist standard hotel in Kathmandu before and after your trek. Normally, the rooms are twin share, where you will have to share your room with another member of your group. However, this totally depends on the size of your group and the availability of rooms in the hotel. On request, triple share can also be arranged. Moreover, if you are looking for a single supplement room, extra charges will be applied. During the trek, your stay is arranged in a local guesthouse or lodges with shared amenities. You can also enjoy a hot shower in these lodges. In the absence of shower few buckets of hot water can also be arranged on request. A full board meal (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and tea &coffee) will be provided from the teahouse menu during the entire trek. Usually, porridge, toast or chapattis, oatmeal and local bread are served for breakfast. The food served for lunch and dinner are simply great.

  1. Hello and salutations! Greetings from Nepal. At the Tribhuvan international airport, a representative of our company will be there to greet you as soon as you land. You'll notice him as soon as you step outside the terminal. After a heartfelt encounter between the two of you, he will escort you to the private vehicle. Once you have settled into the car, you will be then taken to one of Kathmandu's lovely hotels.

After checking in at the hotel, you deserve some time to relax. Once you've calmed down at your hotel, you'll prepare for the trek briefing in our office. In this briefing, all of the specifics of the journey will be addressed. So please feel comfortable to ask the speaker any queries you may have right away.

After this brief meeting is over, we'll head to one of the best restaurants in the area for the special Nepali dinner. You may eat Nepali food here and catch a Nepali traditional dance or music performance. Apart from that, we are confident that you will enjoy yourself greatly here with the staff and other trekkers.

Meanwhile, if you want to move the dinner date to the following day, that is also OK with us. Lastly, right after your dinner is complete, we'll drive you to your hotel where you'll spend the night.

  2. Kathmandu, the nation's capital, offers a distinct sense of its past, picturesque surroundings, and historical sites for tourists. More specifically, during this sightseeing tour, you will be taken into these distinctive sites of the city. Those sites hold a special significance to a couple of religion that dates back to the medieval era or even earlier. As a result, the historical works of art are shown in various forms at each of these sites. On this journey, visits will be made at Boudhanath Stupa, Swoyambhunath, Pashupatinath Temple, and Kathmandu Durbar Square. You may also choose Patan Durbar Square instead of any of these 4.

After spending half a day seeing these beautiful spots, we will finally gather to prepare the gear and hiking equipment (trekking boots, a sleeping bag, and a down jacket) for the Makalu base camp trek. When all preparations are finished, you may relax at the hotel or spend the evening wandering the city's streets. Overnight at the Hotel in Kathmandu.

  3. To catch a flight to Tumlingtar, we must go to the domestic airport today. In total, we will spend about 9 to 10 hours on the flight. The flight will take about 35 minutes and goes through the scenic air route providing you with the magical scenes of the Himalayas as well as hilly regions. After arriving at the airport you will catch a road 3-4 hours road trip that will head to the Chichira village of the Gurung People. Overnight at the lodge in Chichira village.

  4. Today on the starting day we will have to cross nearly 6 to 7 hours of trails ahead of us to reach Num village. The trail will take us through old-styled villages with picturesque scenes of the mountains and the lust forests. Num is situated at the high ridge from where you could see the fabulous views of the landscapes nearby. Overnight at the lodge in Num.

  5. Today we will make our way downwards to pass through the terraced fields and forest to catch the Barun River. Crossing the river a couple of times, we will enter the Makalu Barun national park area. Here we must register the name with credentials to obtain a permit. We will continue our trek for a while until we reach Seduwa village. Seduwa village is situated parallel to Num village. Overnight at the lodge in Seduwa.

  6. Today we will trek with two rivers, Ishuwa Khola and Kusuwa Khola side by side. We will soon cross Isuwa Khola and go through several tiny settlements and forests. We will then pass through the rice fields until we reach the eye-relaxing exotic village of Tashi Gaon. Here, you will be surrounded by the beautiful Himalayas. Overnight at the lodge in Tashigaon.

  7. The paths are more difficult now since we must travel through more difficult terrain at greater altitudes. Today we will have to head upwards through forests and rivers ultimately leading us up to the ridge. We will keep on ascending as the trail gets more steeper and steeper. Finally, we will arrive at the Kharka, and we go down the rocky stone steps and across lakes until we reach the top of the ridge. From this ridge, it just takes some moments to reach Khongma Dada. Spectacular views of the Chamlan mountain can be seen from the hilltop of this village as we overnight here.

  8. We will have to take the first rest day of our Makalu base camp trek as we are already at the height of 3500m. Therefore, before we gradually climb upward, it will be much better to acclimatize ourselves at this atmospheric level. Furthermore, it will give us plenty of time to recover before heading to Shipton La the following day. But besides resting for a full day, it will be so much better for you to explore the village surroundings for the views. You'll eventually arrive at the same place for the overnight stay.

  9. With plenty of the rest yesterday, we are all set to cross 4 of the passes to finally Dobate. First, we will head towards Kauma La Pass (3637m) and then head onto Keke La Pass (4127m). Also, we further climb to Shipton La Pass (4170m) and explore the nearby lake Kalo Pokhari ( 3930m). After exploring we head towards Tutu La Pass and finally arrive at the Dobate Valley for an overnight stay after trekking for a couple of hours.

  10. Today we will trek through the Rhododendron forest eventually leading to the Barun River and up to the Valley. The starting couple of hours is pretty difficult as you have to climb the difficult steep slope. Here you also may have the possibility of falling rocks and Landslides. We will steadily go up the trail and gain height until we reach Yangri Kharka, which is located at the bottom of the valley. Overnight at the lodge in Yangri Kharka.

  11. Today we will follow the moderate walking path from the valley. The path will lead us through boulder fields, yak farms, wooden bridges, and lust woods. While starting the trek, we will encounter the huge valley walls above us. Chasing the spectacular mountains we will head through moraines and small villages to ultimately arrive at Langmale Kharka. Overnight at the lodge in Langmale Kharka.

  12. Today is our special day as we are going towards the Manaslu South base camp. We will make our way to Shershong from Langmale Kharka and finally to Makalu Base camp. The path is flat and made up of icy glaciers accompanied by views of the snowy mountains. Upon reaching the base camp, Mount Everest, Mount Lhotse, and many other peaks from Eastern Nepal will be ready there to greet you.Β  The Himalayan vistas from the base camp will truly be breathtaking to watch. Overnight at the lodge in Makalu base camp.

  13. The base camp is located in a rocky, desolate area, and beyond it lies the immense Barun glacier. Today we will fully explore the base camp as we see the unmatched panorama of Makalu base camp from the south face. We will also see the extended view of Everest and Lhotse today. After fully soaking in the views, we will go to explore the Barun Pokhari and Barun glacier which are just some moments far away. Exploring all of these destinations, you will celebrate your accomplishments and enjoy your time capturing memories. Overnight at the Lodge in Makalu base camp.

  14. Today we make our way down from the base camp as we take our last glimpse of the Makalu base camp trek. We will head through the scattered forest with rugged trails, we pass through the villages like Shersong, Langmale Kharka, and Merek. Further, we will make our way down to stop at Yangri Kharka for an overnight stay.

  15. Today we trek alongside the Barun River eventually leading us through alpine forests, ridges, and a couple of water streams to finally arrive at Dobate. We will have a fine look at the natural landscapes while descending down to Dobate. You could see quite a few exotic animals along the trail, including yaks, blue sheep, pheasants, and many others. Overnight at the lodge in Dobate.

  16. Today we begin our trek with an uphill climb to Mumbuk through the Fir and Rhododendron forests. Moving on we will reach the Base of the Keke La pass. We then Cross Tutu La Pass, Shipton La Pass, and Kauma La Pass to descend down to Khongma Dada. Overnight at the lodge in Khongma Dada.

  17. Today we will do a long and steep descent that goes through the thick forests and lakes. We shall continue down the rocky pathways that cross the mountainside. It would take us nearly about 5 hours to finally reach the indigenous village of Tashigaon. Overnight at the lodge in Tashigaon.

  18. Today we will make our way down through the terraced fields and retrace our step back towards Seduwa village. Waving goodbye to the flora and fauna we exit Makalu barun national park today. Further, we will also cross the hillside and encounter some villages along the route. Finally, after going much lower through the Barun River we will finally stop at the Seduwa to spend the night at the local lodge.

  19. Today's trek is primarily a lengthy, steep descent down through a series of stone stairs that leads to the Arun River. You will cross plenty of uphill and downhill sections that pass through dense forest and sherpa communities. As you drop down to a relatively low altitude you will feel a lot warmer than before. Finally, you will cross the river and return to Num village after completing an 800-m climb. Overnight at the lodge in Num Village.

  20. Finally, today is the last day of your Makalu base camp trek journey. We will enjoy the last views of Mt. Makalu as you follow the path to Chichira. Finally, upon reaching Tumlingtar, you may congratulate yourselves on completing this difficult and amazing journey. We will remain here and relax before leaving early the next morning for Kathmandu.

  21. We'll eat breakfast this morning and then head to the airport early to catch the flight back to Kathmandu. Again we will fly back to the capital with the Evergreen amazing views of the mountains from the air. So for that reason, don't forget to choose the right-hand seat in the aircraft for the fine view.

After landing at the airport you will be met and transferred to the hotel. At the hotel, you can rest and relax for a day. Or, you could explore the nearby streets and be ready for the farewell meal specially organized for you. Overnight at the hotel in Kathmandu.

  22. Today marks the end of your trek through the Manaslu base camp with us. A representative of our company will delicately take you to the international airport three hours before your flight while having a nice conversation. He will congratulate you cordially and wish you a safe and prosperous journey once you get to the entryway. Even when we part ways, we won't forget you and we are always ready to contact you through a variety of means. Happy traveling till then!

"Several months ago, a friend of mine came back from world-round-trip and said, β€œA.B.C trekking is what you cannot see in any other places but Nepal”, and excitingly showed me a lot of incredibly beautiful pictures from the mountain and the country, Nepal. The story he shared caught my heart and strongly made me want to visit this country. And now, I also strongly recommend this adventure into wild nature. This is the reason why I am here, coming back from 10days Annapurna base camp(A.B.C) to write a review for one of the best agency (Adventure Mountain Explore Treks & Expedition P. Ltd) in Kathmandu and for you. What I have found during this trip is that this trip is therapeutic, educational, and exciting. First of all, in the mountain area, there are no such things as mobile, familiar TV show, disturbing noise, and annoying friends. You are literally surrounded by nature and all you can trust is your guide and your heart. You also have much free time in the mountain, which makes you think a lot about your future. Second, trekking is educational. You may see a various people from around the world as well as local people. This, I believe, is the best way of getting to know each other, as you will see them again and again during the trail. Exchanging their personal story and back ground helps you grow your personality as well. Third, it is exciting. There is no question about it. When I saw the panorama view from A.B.C, I got so excited that I could not take my camera away (I am sure I took more than 100 pictures and video there). That was defiantly worth it. Now, I am going to share a bit about my trekking partner, my guide, Lok Bhatta. He is friendly guy. He is not only experienced guide, but he knows how he can entertain us during the whole trip. His caring and his humor take up my good memory of trip. Since Lok and I spent 11days together, it is no wonder we became a best friends. Also he persistently looks after me. When I wanted him to take pictures, he always s..."

"My mother and I arrived in Kathmandu with just 2 days to prepare for a trek around Annapurna Circuit. We feel very lucky to have met Mr. Tika Regmi and through Adventure Mountain Explore treks we were able to hire a porter-guide to facilitate exactly the kind of trek we wanted, a self-directed trek with Nepali assistance. Our porter-guide Sujan was a trusted and integral part of our little trekking party. He was very knowledgeable about the route, its hotels and side trips, and he even introduced us to local people and gave us interactions with local Nepalese that we could not have experienced on our own, like a tea in the home of a local family! We couldn’t be any more pleased with our trek. Shanna Simmons 1152 Crescent Avenue Klamath Falls, OR 97601 USA shannasimmons@hotmail.com"

With Tika's expert help, our trek was arranged with an extraordinary guide, Sittal "Hom" Simkhada and two equally adept porters, Santosh Uperkoti and Sanjeep. Sittal knew the trail very well having done it more than 25 times. He provided information and insights about each peak and landmark along the way. He guided us up and down with care and confidence, setting a good pace that worked for each of us, our ages being 69, 67, and 30 years old. Sittal also got us to our teahouse rooms promptly and made sure we got our meals on time. We never had to ask for service; it was always provided with a smile. We enjoyed the camaraderie or our guide and porters and spent time playing cards together and exchanging stories. Clearly Sittal loved what he was doing and was experienced with every aspect of being a guide. When our daughter became ill along the way in Manang, Sittal conferred with Tika and we took an extra day to make sure all was well before continuing. There was no pressure to move on before we felt ready. When we reached the summit at Thorang la Pass we all celebrated together. It was a group achievement as well as a personal one for each of us. We are pleased to recommend Tika Regni as trek organizer and Sittal Simkhada as guide with our highest esteem and respect.
