Happy New Year to Everyone!

New Bailey Bridge Connecting Nepal and Tibet in Rasuwagadhi Border.

The year 2026 begins with encouraging news. Nepal–China overland connectivity, which had been disrupted by devastating floods last year, has now been restored. On 8 July 2025 (Ashad 24, 2082), severe flooding of the Lhende River completely washed away the Miteri Bridge—also known as the Friendship Bridge—over the Bhotekoshi River in Rasuwa. This forced the temporary closure of Rasuwagadhi, one of Nepal’s most important trade gateways with China.

The closure severely disrupted cross-border movement, trade, and travel between Nepal and China, affecting businesses and travelers on both sides.

Following the successful installation of a 91-meter Bailey bridge on 27 December 2025, this critical link for cross-border trade and transit has now been reestablished—nearly six months after the disruption.

Importance of the Rasuwagadhi Border

The Rasuwagadhi border is not only vital for trade but also serves as a major entry point for tourists and pilgrims traveling from Nepal to Tibet. It offers relatively easy and economical access to popular destinations such as:

  • Everest Base Camp (North)

  • Yamdrok Lake

  • Lhasa

  • Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar, sacred to followers of Hinduism and Buddhism worldwide

Each year, from May through the end of September, this border handles a high volume of tourist and pilgrim traffic, particularly for Kailash–Mansarovar journeys.

Impact of the 2025 Flood

The floods of 8 July 2025 brought all cross-border operations to a complete halt. Trade, transportation, and tourism activities came to a standstill, leading to widespread tour cancellations, revenue losses, and operational disruptions. Businesses and workers dependent on tourism in both Nepal and Tibet faced significant uncertainty during this period.

Looking Ahead

With the completion of the Bailey bridge, renewed hope has returned to both the trade and travel sectors. The Rasuwagadhi border is expected to reopen for travelers starting in February 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions from Travelers

How long does it take to drive from Kathmandu to the Rasuwagadhi border?
The drive typically takes about 6–7 hours, depending on road and traffic conditions.

What time should we depart from Kathmandu?
Tibet time is 2 hours and 15 minutes ahead of Kathmandu time. The border closes around 2:45 PM Nepal time (5:00 PM in Tibet). Considering travel time, traffic, road conditions, and short breaks, departure from Kathmandu is recommended between 5:00 and 6:00 AM.

Is helicopter travel available from Kathmandu to the Rasuwagadhi border?
Yes, helicopter flights are available on the Nepal side. The helipad is located near Sonam Guest House, approximately 1.7 kilometers from the border.

What are the road conditions from Kathmandu to Rasuwagadhi?
The route is a highway, but some sections are still under construction. While much of the road is paved, certain stretches—especially beyond Dhunche and Syabrubesi toward the border—remain rough or off-road.

Is the route safe during the monsoon or rainy season?
Most of the highway is generally safe during the monsoon. However, some sections are prone to landslides, which may cause temporary delays. These are usually cleared through coordinated efforts by local communities, the army, and the police.

Are rest stops and basic facilities available along the route?
Yes, roadside lodges, tea houses, and basic facilities such as food, accommodation, and toilets are available along the way.

Is there an alternative route if the main road is blocked?
If the Rasuwagadhi route is blocked, the Kodari Highway via the Tatopani border is the main alternative. This route was closed for over four years following the 2015 earthquake and reopened in May (initially for cargo only). In 2025, after the Rasuwagadhi bridge was washed away, Tatopani was also opened to leisure travelers.

As trade and transit resume through Rasuwagadhi, the border once again stands as a vital link between Nepal and China—bringing renewed optimism to the travel and tourism industries in both Nepal and Tibet after nearly six months of closure.
