Sauraha is located nearby Chitwan National park which lies south of Kathmandu. It covers an area of 932 square km of sub tropical forest consisting of grassland, Sal forest and river rain forest. It is one of the most diverse wildlife areas of Nepal. It has many wild animals such as Royal Bengal Tiger, One horned rhinos, Crocodile, Asian Elephant, Bears and common leopard. The park is a habitat for over 500 residential and migratory species of birds. This is great place to explore flora and fauna with in short time period. It also has largest Elephant breeding arm center of Asia where you can encounter many babies of Elephants.
8th Chitwan Elephant Festival (Elephant Race) will be held on the 26th -28thDecember 2011 which is organized by regional hotel association of Nepal. There will be many Elephants who will take part on it and those are belongs to the hotels and also some of them are from the Nepal Government. Last year an elephant named Champakali won the elephant race.
Chitwan National Park owns a herd of about 30 elephants which are used as part of the festival. If you want to see something unique to Asia, the end of December is always the time of year to see some elephant sports in Sauraha.
